GLP in more depth
Good education can change life. I experienced it first-hand. Most underprivileged people never received the opportunity I had. How can we extend such opportunities to billions more people?
Global Learning Platform (GLP) will integrate elements of effective education with intelligent software and harness worldwide collaborative efforts to create great learning systems. The platform will feature intelligent tutoring systems (ITS), socially-motivated learning, high-quality materials, and an economic system. GLP will make all this available via multiple channels: PCs, sub-notebooks, game consoles, and mobile phones.
Good ITSs, like PUMP Algebra Tutor, are twice as effective as classroom learning or better. GLP will bring their effectiveness to billions more people. GLP will also open up the algorithms inside ITSs. Open-sourcing allows contributions from experts worldwide, leading to tailored and better systems.
Compelling experiments in virtual worlds, videos by inspiring teachers, thought-stimulating interactive problems, and knowledge-filled educational games. Too few materials like these are currently available on the open Internet. GLP will integrate various kinds of high-quality materials, and make them reinforce each other. Customized curricula are created from components. Collaborative translation will enhance international accessibility to great materials.
Learning is more effective with social motivation. GLP will incorporate live and recorded interactions among learners and mentors. Exercise results could, with permission, be available for rankings and friendly competition among teams. Pledges with peer groups will increase learner’s achievements.
Economic incentives are needed to draw participation from talented people and copyright holders and to encourage production of great materials. Costs to learners will be minimal or zero through competition, economy of scale, and sponsorships.
Billions of youth and adults will improve their lives with substantially more effective education, both of academic and practical kinds. Moreover, underprivileged members of our global village will be given a chance to create the futures they and their families deserve.
